Romantic walk
Park Walk - In Goethe’s Footsteps
58 hectares of cultural history as a landscape of love: Goethe and Christiane, Liszt's “Dreams of Love” - and the tragic flip side of feeling in light, water and quiet ruins.

About this tour
The Park an der Ilm is no ordinary city park - it was built to move the heart. On this two-hour romantic walk through Weimar's UNESCO World Heritage site, we follow the real love stories of Classicism: Goethe and Christiane Vulpius, whose story began here on 12 July 1788; Goethe's love by letter for Charlotte von Stein; Franz Liszt's “Dreams of Love” for Princess Carolyne; and the tender friendship between Goethe and Duke Carl August. We stand at the Shakespeare monument with the rose branch, at Goethe's garden house, at the Roman House, at the Goethe-Hafis monument (East meets West) and at the Nadelöhr - the memorial to young Christiane von Laßberg, whose tragedy is the reason this park exists at all. A walk through the beautiful and the painful sides of love.
