A new perspective

Strong Women in Weimar

Behind - and beside - Goethe, Schiller and the Bauhaus stood women who made Weimar great: as regents, thinkers and designers. This tour makes them visible.

About this tour

Goethe and Schiller stand on the Theaterplatz in bronze. The women without whom neither of them would ever have come to Weimar stand nowhere - this tour changes that. Eight stops, one common thread from 1756 to the present: Anna Amalia, widowed at 18, who put the state finances in order. Marianne von Willemer, whose poems ran under Goethe's name for fifty years. Christiane Vulpius, who according to tradition protected Goethe from Napoleon's soldiers in 1806. The women of the Bauhaus, who were pushed into the weaving workshop and still became among the most influential designers of the 20th century - and Anita Bach, who in 1965 became the first woman professor of architecture in the GDR. Marie Juchacz, who on 19 February 1919 was the first woman to speak in the German national parliament - and Nike Wagner, who a century later directed the Kunstfest Weimar. Three librarians who in 1989 set off the first demonstration of the Peaceful Revolution in Weimar with a rumour.
